Safe Browsing

There are two different elements to keeping your visit to this website on this computer private.

Keeping it private while you are on the site

If you don’t want someone to see you using this website while you are on it, you can click the Quick Exit button at the top right hand side of this page at any time.  This will immediately link to the BBC website.

It’s a good idea to have something else open (maybe another website, or a word processing document) so that when this website closes you aren’t left looking at a blank desktop.

Keeping it private once you have finished

Your visit to this (or any other) page on the internet can be discovered quite easily by someone else after you have closed it down and left it.

To minimise the chances of this happening, you can take these simple steps to delete the traces of where you have been.

First you need to know that you are using Firefox browser” for example. To do this, click on the Help menu at the top of the browser screen.  On the drop down menu, the last entry will be ‘About Internet Explorer’ or ‘About Mozilla Firefox’ or something similar.  Select that option and a box will appear with the browser name and version on it.

Next, open up a safe page, one that won’t raise any concerns (eg weather forecast) and close down the Rape Crisis page.

Then follow the instructions for your particular browser from the list below. Because of the number of different browsers and versions, it isn’t practical for us to write out complete instructions for all of them.  Click on the name of your browser and it will open up a new window with the instructions on it.

It is important to say that there is a risk involved in deleting ALL history and clearing ALL cookies from your computer.  It is possible that other users of the computer will be able to tell that you have done this, because addresses will no longer appear and passwords might be lost.

To avoid this, it is best to only clear specific items from the history – the sites you want to hide – or to clear the most recent history rather than clearing all. Most browsers allow you to do this.

Keeping it private before you start

Users of recent versions of most browsers can use Private Browsing settings.  If you set this up next time before you come to Rape Crisis, your computer will not record where you have been.

Click on the name of your browser and it will open up a new window with the instructions on it.
